The Spirit Behind the Lens launches with a night of celebration featuring the book launch and exclusive book reading by Eddie Otchere himself. Guests will experience an evening of curated music by the Mau Mau Sound System, digital slideshows, and a libation ceremony, culminating with a set. Friday, November 29 – Community Learning Day: The Making of SBTL. Thought and Action
Legendary photographers Simon Wheatley and Eddie Otchere lead a walk from Hoxton Arches to BSMT Space, inviting participants to explore photography by walking, talking, and shooting. The afternoon includes a guided tour of renowned graffiti artist Mau Mau’s new installation (at BSMT), and then return to process film and create a contact sheet in the darkroom. Saturday, November 30 – Guest Speakers Day: Conversations around SBTL. Reasoning & Roots
Saturday’s program brings together thought-provoking voices in the photography and art world, including artists, printers, and retouchers. Notable speakers include Dennis Watson, Jermaine Francis, Holly Marie Cato, and Simon Wheatley. The evening wraps up with a special Roots Music session featuring author Paul Gilroy, blending deep cultural insights with an unforgettable music experience.
Sunday, December 1 – The Art of Photography Day: Retrospection and Introductions
A day to ruminate on photography and jazz with music played by Otchere as well as 2 guided talks. The event opens at noon, followed by the first Otchere talk at 14:00hrs, with a second session at 16:20hrs. At 17:00 hrs, take advantage of the pre-gift season print sale. All unsold works will be heavily discounted and signed offering unique single edition photographic prints.
